Sem Development

Sem

"When I say training the mind in this context, I'm not referring to the mind merely as one's cognitive ability or intellect. Rather, I'm using the term in the sense of the Tibeten word Sem, which has a much broader meaning, closer to Psyche or Spirit. It includes intellect and feeling, heart and mind. By bringing about a certain inner discipline, we can undergo a transformation of our attitude, our entire outlook and approach to living."

H.H. Dalai Lama

The Art of Happiness

The Tibetan word sem captures the essence of how we interact with the world. It sees the holistic nature of our mind and considers that attention must be paid to developing logical as well as intuitive abilities. It recognizes that we can not understand ourselves or the world around us completely unless we consider both our intellectual abilities and our emotional nature. Much of our early education and continued professional training has a bias for the academic, intellectual, content based version of knowledge. Than we begin to build a career in corporate environments and realize that the biggest challenges are less about intellectual abilities and more about the ability to navigate relationships. We begin to notice our deficiencies in managing ourselves in stressful, intense situations and are uncomfortable and uncertain how to best approach other people with difficult and pressing issues or even to just create and encourage environments in which people naturally confront issues openly and appropriately. Sem Development has grown out of a desire to bring balance back to the field of performance management. The programs and services offered are grounded in essential principles of human functioning from the fields of organizational behavior and psychology.
